Family shocked at Bangladeshi's arrest in NY plot

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? A Bangladeshi man accused of trying to bomb the Federal Reserve building in New York City is a banker's son from a middle class neighborhood whose family members said Thursday that they were stunned by his arrest.

The FBI arrested 21-year-old Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis on Wednesday after he tried to detonate a fake 1,000-pound (454-kilogram) car bomb, according to a criminal complaint.

Prosecutors said Nafis traveled to the U.S. on a student visa in January to carry out an attack.

His family said Thursday that Nafis was incapable of such actions.

"My son can't do it," his father, Quazi Ahsanullah, said as he wept in his home in the Jatrabari neighborhood in north Dhaka.

"He is very gentle and devoted to his studies," he said, pointing to Nafis' time at the private North South University in Dhaka.

However, Belal Ahmed, a spokesman for the university, said Nafis was a terrible student who was put on probation and threatened with expulsion if he didn't bring his grades up. Nafis eventually just stopped coming to school, Ahmed said.

Ahsanullah said his son convinced him to send him to America to study, arguing that with a U.S. degree he had a better chance at success in Bangladesh.

"I spent all my savings to send him to America," he said.

He called on the government to "get my son back home."

Bangladesh does not have the same record of involvement in global terror as Pakistan, with which it once formed a nation before winning its independence in 1971. At least one Bangladeshi was among those detained by the U.S. at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

Israel: Gaza militants fired anti-aircraft missile

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli defense officials say that Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip have for the first time fired an anti-aircraft missile at Israeli aircraft.

The officials say the militants fired the Strela shoulder-fired missile at an Israeli helicopter operating over Gaza last week, but missed their target.

The officials, speaking under condition of anonymity because they were discussing a military operation, said Israeli intelligence has long believed that Gaza militants possessed these weapons, but this was the first time they were fired. They said the air force has taken special precautions for several years assuming the threat existed.

Israel believes the weapons originated in Libya and were smuggled through tunnels along the Egyptian border.

Palestinian militant groups have never acknowledged possessing the weapons.

Google CEO Warns Against Antitrust - Business Insider

Google cofounder Larry Page is back on stage.

At the company's annual Zeitgeist conference for partners, the company's CEO made his first public speech since June, when Google announced that an illness had led to Page losing his voice.

The Wall Street Journal?reports that his voice was "raspy" and that Page said he was "still a little hoarse but I'm here and I'm happy about that."

What brought Page back? Among other topics he covered, Page said he was worried about government regulation of the Internet, but "hopeful" that Google could work with antitrust regulators.

That's a prospect his company is now facing, as the Federal Trade Commission is reportedly considering taking action against Google for misuse of its dominant position in Web search. The European Union is also investigating Google over its privacy policies.

"I do think over-regulation of the Internet and restriction of what people can do is a big risk for us," Page said.

He gave Google Now, the voice-recognition system for Android phones, as an example of something the company couldn't do under its older patchwork of privacy policies.

Page hardly helped his case, though, when he noted that Google's inclusion of its own mapping service in search results had driven rivals out of the market.

"People said, 'there's MapQuest ...'" Page said, referring to the AOL maps program. "No one uses them anymore."

That's not exactly true, but in any event, it's not a smart thing for the CEO of a company facing antitrust scrutiny to say.

Before we get started making this popcorn let me give you a taste of what you are creating here. Picture this: caramel corn meets a nutty brittle.

This popcorn is all natural and maple sweetened. Nuts add some salty crunch and I tossed it all with some lightly salted puffy white popcorn to balance everything out.

Like this?

Baby showers are so fun aren?t? they?! Celebrating with friends and family about the upcoming arrival of a sweet baby is one of life?s greatest joys.

I met Lisa two summers ago at the evo ?11 conference. We had been friends online and hit it off for reals right away. We enjoyed early morning chat sessions & long talks on the treadmill at the Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah. A super fun time. We re-connected this spring at beautiful Redwood Hill Farm.

We both have gobs in common and I am so happy to celebrate her almost here baby boy!

I created this fall flavored popcorn recipe for your shower because it is simple to prepare, is gluten free, really healthy and I thought you would enjoy it too.

Popcorn is great all the time. I packed this on ?hikes I took in Telluride this week. I added a few extra nuts to it and made it more of a trail mix. Make it as nutty or not nutty as you want.

Maple-Pumpkin-Popcorn-Marla-Meridith-IMG_4104This popcorn can easily be:

  • Trail Mix
  • Pre or post workout snack
  • Dessert
  • Yogurt Parfait topping (you really need to try this)
  • Oatmeal Topping (yes!)
  • Cereal ~ serve with milk!
  • Shower, Party food

I really had this with milk and pretended it was a breakfast cereal. I mean why not, right?

Milk-Bottles-Marla-Meridith-IMG_4110

So you can just munch this popcorn out of hand ~ or experiment with playful ideas.

What is your favorite popcorn recipe?

Maple Pumpkin Spice Popcorn

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (430 g) Popcorn Kernels
  • 1/2 cup (120 g) Coconut Oil
  • 1 cup (260 g) pure Maple Syrup (I prefer Grade B)
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened Pumpkin Pur?e
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine Sea Salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • 1 cup (110 grams) Roasted Salted Pecans, chopped

Method

  • Preheat oven to 250 F with the rack in the middle. Pop your popcorn in the microwave or over the stove. Set one half of the popcorn aside and lightly salt it. Remove any kernels if necessary.
  • In a small sauce pan melt the coconut oil over medium heat. Stir in maple syrup, pumpkin, salt, cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice. Bring to a boil, stir and remove from the heat.
  • Pour maple syrup oven 1/2 of the popcorn in a large bowl. Combine well with a pair of tongs. The popcorn will flatten and get soggy at this point, but don't worry because it will crisp up after you bake it.
  • Pour the popcorn onto a large baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for about 1 hour 15 minutes. Toss with tongs every 15 minutes. The last 15 minutes of baking time add the chopped pecans.
  • Remove popcorn from the oven, let it cool. Break up the larger pieces with your fingers and toss with the other 1/2 of the white popcorn.

Health & Fitness Solutions: Quitting Smoking Makes You Nicer

You probably already know that quitting smoking makes you healthier, but did you know that it also makes you nicer?
Quitting smoking makes you healthier AND it makes you nicer. And it turns out that while blacks have a harder time quitting, there is no difference in the quitting ability between the sexes.

?Once you DO quit, you'll not only SMELL nicer, you'll BE nicer. Researchers have found evidence that shows those who quit smoking show improvements in their overall personality. And who would WANT to smoke, anyway, with all those nasty ingredients in cigarettes? Read more

Blue Origin tests rocket engine thrust chamber

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2012) ? NASA's Commercial Crew Program (CCP) partner Blue Origin has successfully fired the thrust chamber assembly for its new 100,000 pound thrust BE-3 liquid oxygen, liquid hydrogen rocket engine. As part of Blue's Reusable Booster System (RBS), the engines are designed eventually to launch the biconic-shaped Space Vehicle the company is developing.

The test was part of Blue Origin's work supporting its funded Space Act Agreement with NASA during Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev2). CCDev2 continues to bring spacecraft and launch vehicle designs forward to develop a U.S. commercial crew space transportation capability that ultimately could become available for the government and other customers.

"Blue Origin continues to be extremely innovative as it develops a crew-capable vehicle for suborbital and orbital flights," said Ed Mango, CCP manager. "We're thrilled the company's engine test fire was met with success."

The test took place early this month on the E-1 test stand at NASA's Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Miss. Blue Origin engineers successfully completed the test by powering the thrust chamber to its full power level.

"We are very excited to have demonstrated a new class of high-performance hydrogen engines," said Rob Meyerson, president and program manager of Blue Origin. "Access to the Stennis test facility and its talented operations team was instrumental in conducting full-power testing of this new thrust chamber."

As part of CCDev2, Blue Origin also completed a system requirements review of its spacecraft. During the review, engineers and technical experts representing NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration and the company assessed the spacecraft's ability to meet safety and mission requirements to low-Earth orbit. That review also included results from more than 100 wind tunnel tests of the vehicle's aerodynamic design, stability during flight and cross-range maneuverability.

All of NASA's industry partners, including Blue Origin, continue to meet their established milestones in developing commercial crew transportation capabilities.

While NASA works with U.S. industry partners to develop commercial spaceflight capabilities, the agency also is developing the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS), a crew capsule and heavy-lift rocket to provide an entirely new capability for human exploration. Designed to be flexible for launching spacecraft for crew and cargo missions, SLS and Orion will expand human presence beyond low Earth orbit and enable new missions of exploration into the solar system.

P!nk's "Truth About Love"

October 16, 2012

Sabrina Clarke, Online Arts & Entertainment Editor

This fall, active music listeners can expect an array of albums coming out from a variety of genres.

Many artists dropping albums for fall 2012?face the struggle of topping their previous hits or making a comeback following a hiatus. But in the end, when it comes to anything music related, artists ultimately fight for the coveted number one spot on the Billboard 200 list.

The Billboard list ranks all of music?s top 200 albums based on amount sold and airplay, driving listeners to buy those nearer to the top. The only way to be a top?200 album?is to get?a lot of air time on the radio, and?numerous plays on various music apps.

No Doubt: ?Push and Shove?

The pop-rock group, headed by Gwen Stefani, has finally come out with a new album after eleven years. The album, entitled ?Push and Shove,? is definitely one of the best since their singles collection in 2003. It contains two of their newest singles ?Settle Down? and ?Looking Hot.?

Paralleling itself with the group?s typical?technique of mixing genres, like dub and pop, all of the songs on ?Push and Shove? have some kind of reggae touch to them. This addition is initially what gave No Doubt fans, something different from?the typical?rock band.

No Doubt isn?t all rock. Several of their songs could be categorized as R&B due to the more mature themes, like relationships and marriage as well as containing some aspect rhythm and blues. The album shifts from upbeat to ballad quickly, showing the group?s diversity.

?Push and Shove? is one for the books and should expect good ratings partly because of?the group?s comeback and because of?the album?s dynamic composition.

GOOD Music: ?Kanye West Presents GOOD Music Cruel Summer?

Speaking of ?good,? Kanye West?s rap label, GOOD Music, was released Sept. 14.

GOOD Music was founded in 2004 with?twelve signed artists. These artists, Common, John Legend, Malik Yusef, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Mr Hudson, Cyhi the Prince, Mos Def, Pusha T, D?banj, Teyana Taylor and Bon Iver, were all signed periodically, though, in order for West to keep a close watch on their progressing careers.

?Cruel Summer,? a highly anticipated work, topped West?s previous album,??My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,? which dropped in 2010. This album consists of all of the artists of GOOD Music on different tracks, collaborating with each other while also featuring other artists.

One may expect to hear repetitive beats as in most rap songs, but they are nonetheless entertaining when actually listening to the words.

Remember, young people, unless the edited version is purchased, this album advises parental supervision!

P!nk: ?The Truth About Love?

Four years later, the pop sensation has released yet another album that,?coincidentally, talks about love, featuring her hit single, ?Blow Me (One Last Kiss).?

In its debut, ?The Truth About Love? reached number one on Billboard 200 and has yet to reach there again.

Compared to her other albums, this album?s track list is listed in somewhat of a story between a man and a woman. Beginning with ?Are We All We Are,? a song about the way people are when it comes to love, the ?story? then moves into the actual relationship between the man an woman and then transfers into the heartbreak with both ?The Truth About Love? and ?Beam Me Up.? This story ends when the entire situation makes full circle with ?Here Comes the Weekend,? an appropriate closing for the album.

?The Truth About Love? is definitely a memorable album solely for the dynamics and the track titles. P!nk knows exactly how to reel in listeners when it comes to those.

?

These three albums are?sure standouts and will most likely change?anyone?s opinion on any of these artists, because they step somewhat out of their comfort zone to please their fans.

Kelly Monaco: I cursed 'DWTS' pro over dance

Craig Sjodin / ABC

Soap star Kelly Monaco is back in the ballroom to try for her second mirror ball trophy.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Monday night on "Dancing With the Stars," the all-star cast will be taking on dances rarely seen on the ballroom bash -- including Bollywood, disco, the mambo and more -- and "General Hospital" star Kelly Monaco wasn't too excited about the challenge at first.

During last Tuesday's live results show, the contestants and their pros selected the dances for their competitors. Pro Cheryl Burke gave the soap star contemporary.

"I personally told her to (expletive) off for giving me (contemporary)," Kelly told The Clicker. "I'd never even heard of it! I don't watch 'So You Think You Can Dance.' ... I was like, 'This isn't the show I signed up for!' I didn't know I'd be doing this!"

And it seems her pro partner, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, wasn't expecting it either.

"We called in a choreographer because Val had no idea what to do, so we're both being taught," Kelly, who won the first season of "DWTS," explained. "It's an interesting dynamic having both of us sort of in the same position. I mean, clearly, he is a lot more trained in dance lingo so he can follow better than I could ever dream of."

The pair, who tied for first place last week with their powerful paso doble, aren't the only ones unfamiliar with their new dance. "I know every couple is in the same boat with their professional dancer (with this) not being their forte," Kelly said. "I think it's going to make for a great show. ... You're going to see the couples working together in a way we've never worked together before."

The contemporary dance is also proving to be a lot of work for the actress, who is thankful to have a few days off from "General Hospital" to master the moves.

"I've never physically worked this hard in my entire life," she said. "This contemporary dance is so physical. I woke up (Friday), I couldn't move! ... This is like a whole other level of dancing. For Val to challenge me through dance to ... not his level, but a level that is comparable to his level, is just super, super intense and physical. ... The level of difficulty is far beyond anything I've ever done before."?

But as big a challenge as a contemporary dance may be, Kelly said she's now happy with her assignment. "I appreciate it now," the season one champ said. "Now that I'm learning it and feeling it and doing it, I'm so glad I have contemporary. Val and I are embracing it."

As for the dance itself, "It's intense," she teased. "It's a really beautiful, passionate intense dance" to a Coldplay tune. "If I can execute this dance to the way it's supposed to be told -- I know Val can -- if I can live up to a fraction of his standards, then I think we're going to have something really great on our hands."

"Dancing With the Stars" airs Monday at 8 p.m. on ABC. For a full list of the contestants' dances for the week, check out Tuesday's results recap. You can also chat with me and fellow "DWTS" fans as the stars perform their dances! Live chats begin at 8 p.m. ET. Sign up for a reminder!

Who do you predict will do the best on Monday night? Tell us your pick on our Facebook page!

Pelvic Floor 101

If I were to ask a room full of people ?what are kegal exercises?? I?m sure it would be all the women?s hands that would shoot up.

For those of you who don?t know, kegals are pelvic floor exercises that women are advised to do during their pregnancy to help avoid embarrassing ?leaks?.

Embarrassing leaks are not confined to women who have had children, cosmetic companies spend a lot of money targeting women in general, which sweeps under the table the fact that men can suffer too. So although this is a pregnancy focussed health and fitness blog the below holistic approach could apply to anyone.

The pelvic floor (or pelvic diaphragm) consists of muscle and tissue that covers the area below your hips, keeping lots of your important bits separate. It also has important functions during childbirth helping the fetus navigate through the pelvic girdle i.e. helping contain the baby until the head is ready to engage.

So what right?

Well when I first had my first few mid-wife appointments I was told I should be doing my kegals if I wanted to say fit ?down there?. This never seemed right to me and I never bothered doing them. I felt that I would be much better served by performing squats regularly and working on posture and body awareness.

Whilst pregnant I had no problems with those embarrassing leaks I was warned about and have no issues presently so for me, ?I am glad I did not waste time with kegals.

I have since read a great article which further confirms my doubts regarding kegals.

According to recent research published by Rehab Management, pelvic floor incontinence has been linked to postural alignment and weak glutes. Interestingly the act of squeezing and releasing the pelvic floor (the simplest way to explain kegals) adds to the tightness of the muscle and neglects the length. Over time you tighten the muscle and by doing this reduce optimal length-tension relationship. When the pelvic floor is not functioning adequately the result is an inability to control your urge to ?go? or the frequency with which you need to do so, and at worse cause infection.

From a training perspective a shortened pelvic floor are key factors in stress incontinence (imagine sneezing or laughing and a bit of wee coming out! That?s stress incontinence) and is a worry when added intra-abdominal pressure is increased. I was starting to put together a picture of someone who cannot control their lower back, bad posture and a weak bottom, frantically doing their kegals without success.

The research continued to highlight a holistic approach to pelvic floor health looking closely at posture and core strength rather than isolating the muscle itself. As a CrossFitter this makes perfect sense as to we get strong by working the whole body as one unit.

Where does this leave me with kegals? In a healthy active pregnant lady I wouldn?t prescribe them.

I would look at the bigger picture, addressing posture and body awareness to the developing changes in her body. I would recommend squats regularly both with weighted resistance and without. My response is simply squats over kegals ? they provide a much better and more natural way for the pelvic floor to do its job the way nature intended.

Please be aware that past 37 weeks pregnant deep squats are not advised as they can cause an early rupture of the membranes (early sign of labour).

Amphibious vehicle to go on sale soon in US

DETROIT (AP) ? Amphibious vehicles aren't just for James Bond anymore.

A one-person all-terrain vehicle that doubles as a personal watercraft is scheduled to go on sale by the end of this year.

The vehicle ? called the Quadski ? goes up to 45 miles per hour on land. To go in the water, the driver presses a button and the wheels fold into the sides in five seconds. The Quadski also goes 45 miles per hour in the water.

The Quadski will cost around $40,000. It will be sold at water sports dealerships in New York, Boston, the Great Lakes, Florida and Texas.

Michigan-based Gibbs Sports Amphibians says it has spent 16 years and $200 million developing the technology in the Quadski.

U.S. consumer debt drops

Published: Oct. 15, 2012 at 7:16 PM

WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Debt loads among U.S. consumers have receded to levels unseen since before the recession, data from private and public sources say.

U.S. Federal Reserve records indicate less than 16 percent of the average household's income after taxes is being used to pay debt and rent. That's the smallest combined debt and rent load since 1984, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

Moody's Analytics data shows consumer debt, including fixed and revolving debt, is lower than it has been since 2006.

Fixed loans include car and mortgage loans, while revolving debt refers to credit cards and other lines of credit.

The only category of consumer debt that is increasing is student loans, which are much higher than before the recession, as tuition costs have continued to climb and people without jobs are returning to school to increase their chances of finding one.

Overall, debt is lower because consumers are cautious, because monetary policy has pushed interest rates to historic lows and because foreclosures have reduced mortgage debt and lowered credit scores for many consumers.

"It's sort of a new reality that you have. We're going to try to live within our means because living beyond it didn't work out," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago.

Moody's said the average credit card balance dropped to $4,940 April through June, 24 percent lower than the second half of 2008, when credit card debt was an average of $6,500 per household.

In 2008, there were 600 million credit card accounts in the United States. That has dropped to 470 million, Moody's said.

How to Pivot a Pivot ? Business Management Daily: Free Reports ...

pivot table in Microsoft ExcelFor those with nice clean simple datasets to work with, this might seem like a silly thing to want to do. For those of?us who deal with some monster-sized data exports, this could solve so many problems. While you can?t EXACTLY pivot a pivot, in Excel 2010 you can create a data subset with a Pivot Table that can be copied, pasted and ?re-pivoted? in just a few clicks.

  1. Create a Pivot table from your large data set. Select all the fields you?d like to include in your subset. Don?t worry about where the fields land in the Layout Area.
  2. Now, from the Design tab, in the Layout group, click Report Layout and choose Show in Tabular Form.
  3. Drag any fields in the Values area of the Layout to Row Labels. Be sure the order of the fields is what you'd like to see in your data subset.
  4. Again, from the Design tab, in the Layout group, click Report Layout and choose Repeat All Item Labels.
  5. Filter any fields you wish to reduce the number of records to only what you?d like to see in your data subset.
  6. Finally, we?ll clean it up by removing all Subtotals and Grand Totals with the two buttons to the left of Report Layout.

What you should have left is a good representation of your new data subset. Now, just select all your data (try Ctrl+A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste values to a new worksheet.

Video: Walmart vs. Amazon for online shopping dollars

>>> the holiday retail wars are already heating up. best buy now says it will match the online prices of some competitors. walmart is also going after amazon.com, testing same day delivery for online orders. janet shamlian looks at the new way they are competing for online customers.

>> reporter: internet purchases were a $200 billion pile last year, and it's heating up ahead of the holidays. walmart , the nation's largest retailer, wants to feed the neat for instant gratification, testing a $10 same day delivery on some 5,000 products. everything from toys to flat panel tvs, all without having to look for a parking spot.

>> i think it's a great idea. i really feel that it's going to be a really competitive advantage for them, especially going into the holiday season .

>> reporter: walmart to go, as they're calling it, is a shot across the bow of amazon.com, the world's largest online retailer which itself is aiming for same-day delivery. the sellers going head-to-head.

>> one thing i like better about amazon versus walmart is the actual -- the layout of their website. i think it's a little bit easier to follow.

>> because i know walmart and i'm comfortable with walmart , i trust them more than amazon.

>> reporter: walmart is testing the service in minneapolis, philly, northern virginia , and adding the san francisco area next month. amazon already offers same day on products in ten cities, including boston, chicago, vegas, and seattle. the fight for those point and click dollars could come down to the old real estate rule of them. location, location, location. it's early in the testing, but with 4,000 stores, walmart could conceivably offer same-day almost everywhere. by year's end, amazon's distribution centers will total about 60. whether you started out online or started out in the store, you have to do it well if you want to win those consumer dollars and walmart realizes that it's going to have to play ball with amazon. it's goliath versus goliath.

PST: What US needs to advance in Cup qualifying

You may be in the camp that sees a thin result in Antigua and Barbuda as ?job done.?? Or, you may be wincing at this wheezing result, biting nails nervously over another underwhelming evening for the United States.

Either way, the bottom line on a frightful Friday in Antigua is the same in terms of semifinal round positioning.

The win, combined with a very helpful Guatemalan victory over Jamaica, which finished about an hour after the U.S. match Friday, arranged the stage favorably for Jurgen Klinsmann?s men.

All they need is a tie Tuesday against Guatemala at Livestrong Sporting Park outside Kansas City. Any point (a win or draw) will secure the U.S. place among the last six in CONCACAF?s final round of World Cup qualifying.

And since all Guatemala needs is a draw to advance, the situation sets up very well.

Jamaica hosts Antigua and Barbuda, a team that probably left everything on the field Friday. Taking down the United States was the one way Antigua could still make some noise and get the region to take notice.

So, Jamaica has reason to like its chances Friday. And they will attempt to pour it on, hoping to win by at least three goals ? and then pinning all hope on either the United States or Guatemala achieving a win.

Here are the group standings:

The Arts + Video Communications | Business 2 Community

What are ?The Arts? ?

1. The Arts is a group of disciplines, comprising many genres, endeavours or art forms, all united by their employment of the human creative impulse, to express and communicate through various art forms.
2. New and additional genres are being added daily.
3. Let us put them all in one box for ease of understanding. This may be contentious to some globally, who have different perceptions of The Arts.
4. The many forms of expression create an adequate or enormous income for many players, but for others, sadly it must just be perceived as a pastime, due to lack of funds or infrastructures.
5. The Arts are dying in many countries, which are not getting sufficient financial support from their governments or other and so it is time to seek other means of exposure and marketing platforms.

Relando-ThompkinsI recently came across a blog post that was shared by Notes from an Aspiring Humanitarian?s Facebook Community Member Saman Waquad. Saman is always up to something social justice related, and this blog post she shared entitled ?The Glorification of White Crime? really caused me to stop and think.

From Tumblr: The Glorification of White Crime

?pick a crime, any crime, and Western media has probably made a movie/TV series/play/etc. with a white person that romanticizes the criminal activity. No matter what, a white person can do whatever terrible crimes and still have a TV/movie fanbase that loves them.

When you see black or brown people committing crimes on screen, you are to see them thugs and criminal masterminds and people to be beat down.

When you see white people committing crimes on screen, you see a three-dimensional portrait of why someone might commit that crime, how criminals are people too, and how you should even love them for the crimes that they commit because they?re just providing for their families or they?ve wronged or they?re just people and not perfect. This is particularly a luxury given to white male characters, since there few white female criminals as protagonists.???Read the Full Article

The Tumblr page, which is called ?This is White Culture? seeks to ?show a common thread of white history as it relates to the oppression of PoC.? (People of Color)

I haven?t looked over the blog in its entirety, but he subject matter of this post definitely raises some important prompts for discussion about the racialization of crime and how it manifests itself in society.

Did you read the article? What are your thoughts?

(AP) ? Pakistani police have arrested a number of suspects in the case of a 14-year-old girl shot and wounded by the Taliban for promoting education for girls and criticizing the fundamentalist Islamic movement, officials said Friday.

The shooting of Malala Yousufzai along with two classmates while they were on their way home from school Tuesday horrified people in Pakistan and internationally. It has been followed by an outpouring of support for a girl who earned the enmity of the Taliban for publicizing their acts and speaking about the importance of education for girls.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the shooting, saying that the girl was promoting "Western thinking." Late on Thursday, a spokesman for one of the group's branches in the country's north said the top leadership of the Taliban's Swat Valley chapter decided two months ago to kill Yousufzai in a carefully planned attack after her family ignored repeated warnings.

Police have been questioning people in the town of Mingora, in the Swat Valley, where the shooting took place.

Mingora police chief Afzal Khan Afridi said arrests had been made, but he declined to give any details about the number of people detained or what role they're suspected of having in the shooting. He said he did not want to endanger the ongoing investigation.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik told reporters Friday that the two gunmen who staged the attack were not among those arrested, but he said investigators had identified the masterminds of the shooting and efforts were under way to capture all those involved.

The Taliban spokesman, Sirajuddin Ahmad, said Yousufzai's family had been warned three times ? the most recent warning coming last week ? before the decision was made to kill her.

Ahmad said local Taliban leader Maulana Fazlullah and his deputies selected three attackers, including two trained sharpshooters, who carefully studied the girl's route home from school.

Even before the Taliban took over the Swat Valley, Fazlullah's radio broadcasts spread fear among residents in the area. The group first started to exert its influence in 2007 and quickly extended its reach to much of the valley by the next year. They set about imposing their will on residents by forcing men to grow beards, preventing women from going to the market and blowing up many schools ? the majority for girls.

Malala wrote about these practices in a journal for the BBC under a pseudonym when she was just 11. After the Taliban were pushed out of the valley in 2009 by the Pakistani military, she became even more outspoken in advocating for girls' education. She appeared frequently in the media and was given one of the country's highest honors for civilians for her bravery.

Fazlullah, along with much of the Swat Taliban's top leadership, escaped the offensive and is believed to be operating from a base in eastern Afghanistan and sending fighters back across the border to attack northwest Pakistan.

But there are indications that he was trying once again to make inroads into the area.

Between April and June, Pakistani authorities arrested nearly 100 militants in the Swat Valley, said two security officials and a senior government official.

One of those arrested was a woman identified as Naheed Bibi, who was married to Fazlullah and had been sent by him to the valley to help reactivate militant sleeping cells there, the officials added.

Her interrogation led security officials to over 60 telephone numbers of SIM cards she and her aides had bought in various northwestern cities. By monitoring all the numbers, authorities rounded up the militants ? including several would-be suicide bombers ? and a large number of weapons and explosives was also seized, the officials said.

The officials did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Pakistanis across the country held services to pray for Yousufzai's recovery Friday. Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf visited the hospital in Rawalpindi where she's being treated to pay his respects and check on her condition.

As the school Yousufzai attended reopened, children and teachers tried to come to terms with what happened to their star pupil, shot in a bus roughly 300 meters (yards) from her classrooms. Police were deployed around the school, but many students still stayed away.

"We have decided to open the school after two days to overcome the fear among our students that gripped them due to the attack," said one of the teachers, Zafar Ali Khan.

The school is owned and operated by the teenage activist's father, who takes great pride in his daughter's accomplishments and is a champion of education for girls.

The girl was initially airlifted from Mingora to a military hospital in the frontier city of Peshawar, where doctors removed a bullet from her neck. On Thursday, she was transferred to a hospital in Rawalpindi, where the Pakistani army is headquartered near the capital, Islamabad.

Maj. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa said she is being kept on a ventilator and is in stable condition. Bajwa said the bullet entered her head and went into her neck toward her spine, but it was too soon to say whether she had any significant head injury.

"Her blood pressure is normal. Heartbeat is normal, and thanks to God, her condition is satisfactory," Bajwa said.
