Why Republicans see a loss in the Supreme Court as a win at the polls

Supreme Court's 5-to-4 ruling upholding President Obama's health-care law gives Republicans a new case to repeal the law, hammer taxes, and rev up the party base.

Republicans were spurned by the Supreme Court on Thursday ? but if the reaction to the nation?s highest court upholding President Obama?s signature health-care reform law is any indication, the GOP will do its best to ram the court?s decision down Democrats? throats between now and November.

?The Supreme Court spoke today, but they will not have the final word,? said Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R) of Washington, who is GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney?s campaign point person on Capitol Hill. ?The American people will have the final word in November.?

Had the court struck down the law in its entirety or in part, there may have been a need for legislative fixes to federal health-care law ? whether to reinstate popular provisions from the health-care reform bill or fix gaps blown open in the law by the Supreme Court, for example. But because the court upheld the law, the issue was powered straight into the realm of electoral politics.

Congressional Republicans, it became clear Thursday, are going to leverage the Supreme Court?s decision in two ways.

First, they are going to hammer health-care reform, a top issue for many in their conservative base. But this tactic alone risks falling into Democratic talking points that Republicans are stuck in the past and losing their focus on what both sides agree is the election?s No. 1 issue: the economy.

Thus, they are also going to make the case that the health-care law is a job killer ? and take it to the polls in November.

While Republican leaders were wary of discussing the political implications of the day?s decision, conservative advocacy and outside political groups were not so shy.

?While we would have preferred to see Obamacare struck down, this decision will drive Republican voter intensity sky-high,? said Steven Law, the president of the granddaddy of all conservative "super political-action committees," Crossroads GPS. ?The last time Obamacare was litigated in a general election, Republicans picked up an historic number of seats in the US House and made big gains in the US Senate.?

Mr. Law continued, in a statement: ?Our message is that even if the Supreme Court couldn?t protect Americans from what this law will do to their jobs and health care, voters can and will fight back. The Supreme Court effectively made the 2012 elections the most important in a century, and dramatically energized the center-right coalition in the process.?

The most conservative wing of coalition, led by tea party favorites like Sen. Jim DeMint (R) of South Carolina, largely want the law ripped out by the roots.

?This government takeover of health care remains as destructive, unsustainable, and unconstitutional as it was the day it was passed, unread, by a since-fired congressional majority,? Senator DeMint said in a statement. ?Now, as then, our first step toward real health care reform and economic renewal remains Obamacare?s full repeal, down to the last letter and punctuation mark.?

As such, House Republicans announced Thursday that they would vote to repeal the health-care law on July 11, the week both chambers return from recess, for the second time since its passage. With Republicans controlling the House of Representatives, the measure will both undoubtedly pass and then assuredly die in the Democrat-held Senate.

Don't dismiss the Nexus Q just yet ? it has potential

2 hrs.

When Google announced the Nexus Q, an Android-powered "social streaming device," most people scoffed. It has a silly label ??what is social streaming anyway? ??and a startling $299 price tag. But don't write the ball-shaped?gadget off just yet,?because it has the guts and soul to roll its way into your home.

During the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, I?spent a lot of time chatting with folks about the Nexus Q. It's been referred to as everything from a "ball of awesomeness" ??by a Google employee's son?? to a "polished turd."

The price tag's what riled people up most, of course. Why spend $300 on the Nexus Q when you can buy an Apple TV for $99?

"Because it's got all the potential in the world," I theorized, while discussing the device with a former Apple developer. Don't get me wrong, I learned long ago that the true?potential of anything is rarely ever met, but Google's nudging the Nexus Q along in the right ways.

Right now you can only access media through Google Play (formerly the?Android Market) and YouTube on the Nexus Q, but that'll easily change in the future. Google's made sure that the Nexus Q is as?open as possible to developers (and even plans on setting up forums to encourage them). There could soon be all sorts of apps, hacks and tricks for the Android-powered device.

If software enhancements aren't sufficient, then you should keep in mind that the Nexus Q has a micro USB port which could be used for third-party accessories.

You see where I'm going with this? The Nexus Q offers 16GB of on-board storage, NFC support, can be expanded using the micro USB slot, is as open as the 24-hour diner down the street, and can double as a weapon. (This thing's surprisingly heavy.)

It might take a generation or two for the surface of the Nexus Q's potential to be truly scratched, but once it is, Apple TV and other similar devices are in trouble.

The Nexus Q can be pre-ordered now. It will start shipping in mid-July.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Draytek Vigor 2920n Dual-WAN Security Router

The Draytek Vigor 2920n Dual-WAN Security Router ($250) is more than a router?it's more of a comprehensive networking appliance. Actually, as a single-band 802.11n router, it's rather average, with so-so throughput and range. Yet for small businesses looking for features not typically found in routers?such as dual WAN ports for failover and load-balancing, robust VPN deployment, and other business-class features?the Vigor 2920n delivers.

Specs
The Draytek Vigor 2920n Dual-WAN Security Router is a rather large router and is rack-mountable (through purchase of an optional mount kit). Since the device is designed to be deployed in server racks and rooms, the WAN and LAN ports are on the front panel.

There are four Gigabit Ethernet ports and, as mentioned, two Gigabit WAN ports. The router also has one USB port for external drive and printer sharing, as well as 10 LEDs that display not only activity of the WAN ports but Denial-of-Service activity, QoS, VPN, and CSM (Content Security Management) activity. Some organizations may find it handy to tell at a glance if services like VPN are enabled and running OK; the Vigor2920n displays as a solid green light when they are.

The router ships with three attachable antennas, but, based on my range testing of the default configuration, I would upgrade to high-gain antennas for larger coverage areas.
The Vigor 2920n runs quiet and cool, even after a few days of uptime, and it's sturdy enough to have all ports connected with cables the device remain in place on a surface.

Setup and Features
There's a lot happening with this router. It's highly-configurable with a firewall, URL, and Web content filtering, WDS (Wireless Distribution System) support, supports for VLANs and more advanced capabilities such as port mirroring.

A native VPN server supports up to 32 simultaneous VPN tunnels (IPSec, PPTP and L2TP). The device also supports 3G/LTE cellular modems and WiMAX.

The Vigor 2920n's sophisticated diagnostics include a Smart Monitor traffic analyzer. The router also has security provisions against DoS attacks and other threats.

Set up involved connecting the router to a WAN connection and using a computer with DHCP enabled to access the Web-based management interface. I had to manually configure the WAN settings for the router to pick up Internet access.

The Vigor 2920n's interface, while meaty and filled with screens and features, timed out on me several times while I was working in it. I also found configuring content filtering somewhat tedious, although it's very detailed and based on setting up individual "object profiles." For instance, if you want to block certain keywords or URLs, you have to set individual profiles for those objects and then configure filtering. Some configuration options, such as content filtering, seem to be unnecessarily complicated to set up in the interface.

Performance
Throughput performance for Draytek's router in Mixed mode was average, and surprisingly, in 802.11n mode, slightly below average. I did find, however, that the Vigor 2920n sustained throughput relatively well at greater distances from the router. Here is throughput at both Mixed and 802.11-n only modes, compared to other single-band routers:

Good Network Appliance, OK Router
Draytek's Vigor 2920n is a high-end networking device designed for businesses looking for a router that can do business-centric tasks. If your business needs require VPN, very customizable content-filtering, traffic analysis and other specific networking needs, the Vigor 2920n is a good choice. However, average throughput makes it best for SMBs with low throughput demands and warrants the device a solid three stars; more for the impressive features than performance. For a router that delivers high throughput and has some business capabilities, Netgear?s N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR4000) is an Editors? Choice that offers excellent speed at 5GHz.

Fags For Sharia Allowed To March In Pride Parade

Pride wrong in allowing QuAIA's politicized agenda, says B'nai Brith Canada

TORONTO, 29 June 2012 - B'nai Brith Canada has expressed its dismay over today's wrongheaded decision by Pride Toronto's Dispute Resolution Panel and has stated that the decision to allow Queers Against Israeli Apartheid to march in this weekend's parade is a result of a faulty process. The organization said the parade has turned from inclusion to exclusion and that it expects the City of Toronto to make next year's Pride funding conditional on what transpires at this year's parade.

Frank Dimant, CEO of B?nai Brith Canada, issued the following statement:
"We are disappointed that Pride Toronto, an organization once celebrated for its struggle for diversity and inclusion, is allowing Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) to act out its politicized agenda against the Jewish State. Today's decision by Pride's Dispute Resolution Panel is unquestionably clouded by a faulty process and unfortunately displays that Pride has chosen the route of exclusion."

"Allowing QuAIA to march in this weekend's parade is tantamount to endorsing the demonization campaign against the Jewish State and its supporters in Canada. It is now in the hands of the City of Toronto to make next year's Pride funding conditional on QuAIA's behaviour at this year's march. Meanwhile, parade-goers should mark their displeasure at Pride's decision by turning their backs on hateful slogans when passing them this weekend."

Strong earthquake strikes far west China

(AP) ? A strong earthquake has jolted China's Central Asian frontier, shaking buildings and cutting off electricity in the remote mountainous area and sending rescuers in search of casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the Saturday morning quake that hit the Xinjiang region at 6.3 magnitude, while China's Earthquake Networks Center put it at 6.6.

China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that residents near the epicenter were shaken out of bed in pre-dawn darkness and that some households lost electricity. It reported that the quake shook buildings 200 kilometers, or 120 miles, to the west in the regional capital, Urumqi.

Xinhua said rescuers are being dispatched to the sparsely populated area to search for casualties.

Top Texas lawyers say banks fear Dodd-Frank's unknown

Texas community banks already pay a lot to comply with regulations.

They add staff members, pay fees, hire outside advisers and more ? but rules born out of Dodd-Frank have yet to be fully written, and Texas lawyers say banks are dreading the unknown.

That?s because regulations crafted for financial giants have slowly trickled down through the years to community banks with assets below $10 billion ? remember the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002? That easily became law of the land in several industries.

?If you?re talking about what keeps bankers up at night, (Dodd-Frank is) probably near the top of the list ? of what aspects of Dodd-Frank are going to trickle down and become part of their daily lives,? said William Leudke, a partner at the Houston office of law firm Bracewell & Giuliani LLP?

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and its vast powers ? of unknown scope ? is the most intimidating aspect of the new law, lawyers say. Not because the CFPB has jurisdiction over smaller banks ?? it doesn?t, but other federal agencies may take their lead from the CFPB, lawyers say.

There was a scene in the Real Housewives of Miami about H&M. One cast member Alexia Echevarria?was disappointed she couldn?t buy the pale green eyelet skirt and blouse combo she had her eye on or the board shorts for her sons. Alexia Echevarria stated that ?It?s like being in a candy store and you can?t eat anything?. The prices are awesome which will help if you have a rather large mortgage payment on a Miami Beach Luxury Condo.

Recently, researchers have begun to untangle the subtle role these diverse life forms play in maintaining health and regulating weight. (Credit: ? Jezper / Fotolia)

In a new study appearing in the journal Nutrition in Clinical Practice, researcher Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown and her colleagues at the Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Arizona State University?s Biodesign Institute in collaboration with John DiBaise from the Division of Gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic, review the role of gut microbes in nutrient absorption and energy regulation.

According to Krajmalnik-Brown, ?Malnutrition may manifest as either obesity or undernutrition, problems of epidemic proportion worldwide. Microorganisms have been shown to play an important role in nutrient and energy extraction and energy regulation although the specific roles that individual and groups/teams of gut microbes play remain uncertain.?

The study outlines the growth of varied microbial populations ? from birth onwards ? highlighting their role in extracting energy from the diet. The composition of microbial communities is shown to vary with age, body weight, and variety of food ingested; as well as in response to bariatric surgery for obesity, use of antibiotics and many other factors.

Based on current findings, the authors suggest that therapeutic modification of the gut microbiome may offer an attractive approach to future treatment of nutrition-related maladies, including obesity and a range of serious health consequences linked to under-nutrition.

Micromanagers

The microbes in the human gut belong to three broad domains, defined by their molecular phylogeny: Eukarya, Bacteria, and Achaea. Of these, bacteria reign supreme, with two dominant divisions ? known as Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes ? making up over 90 percent of the gut?s microbial population. In contrast, the Achaea that exist in the gut are mostly composed of methanogens (producers of methane) and specifically by Methanobrevibacter smithii ? a hydrogen-consumer.

Within the bacterial categories however, enormous diversity exists. Each individual?s community of gut microbes is unique and profoundly sensitive to environmental conditions, beginning at birth. Indeed, the mode of delivery during the birthing process has been shown to affect an infant?s microbial profile.

Communities of vaginal microbes change during pregnancy in preparation for birth, delivering beneficial microbes to the newborn. At the time of delivery, the vagina is dominated by a pair of bacterial species, Lactobacillus and Prevotella. In contrast, infants delivered by caesarean section typically show microbial communities associated with the skin, including Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, and Propionibacterium. While the full implications of these distinctions are still murky, evidence suggests they may affect an infant?s subsequent development and health, particularly in terms of susceptibility to pathogens.

Diet and destiny

After birth, diet becomes a critical determinant in microbial diversity within the gut. Recent research indicates that microbial populations vary geographically in a manner consistent with regional differences in diet. Children in rural areas of Burkina Faso for example showed much more abundant concentrations of Bacteroidetes compared with their cohorts in Italy, a finding consistent with the African children?s plant-rich diet.

While microbiomes appear to have adapted to local diets, changes in eating habits significantly alter composition of gut microbes. Variations in macronutrient composition can modify the structure of gut microbiota in a few days ? in some cases, a single day. Studies in mice show that changing from a low fat, plant polysaccharide diet to a Western diet high in sugar and fat rapidly and profoundly reconfigures the composition of microbes in the gut.

Another modifier of gut microbe composition is gastric bypass surgery, used in certain cases to alleviate conditions of serious obesity. In earlier work, the authors found that the post-surgical microbial composition of patients who underwent so-called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass was distinct from both obese and normal weight individuals.

?Obesity affects more than a third of adults in the U.S. and is associated with a raft of health conditions including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain forms of cancer,? says Dr. John DiBaise. The authors further note that concentrations in the blood of lipopolysaccharides derived from gut bacteria increase in obese individuals, producing a condition known as metabolic endotoxemia. The disorder has been linked with chronic, systemic, low-level inflammation as well as insulin resistance.

Energy harvest

In the current review, the cycle of microbial energy extraction from food, involving hydrogen-producing and consuming reactions in the human intestine, is described in detail. Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are a critical component in this system. During the digestive process, fermentation in the gut breaks down complex organic compounds, producing SCFA and hydrogen. The hydrogen is either excreted in breath or consumed by 3 groups of microorganisms inhabiting the colon: methanogens, acetogens and sulfate reducers.

Research conducted by the authors and others has demonstrated that hydrogen-consuming methanogens appear in greater abundance in obese as opposed to normal weight individuals. Further, the Firmicutes ? a form of acetogen ? also seem to be linked with obesity. Following fermentation, SCFAs persist in the colon. Greater concentration of SCFAs, especially propionate, were observed in fecal samples from obese as opposed to normal weight children. (SCFAs also behave as signaling molecules, triggering the expression of leptin, which acts as an appetite suppressor.)

While it now seems clear that certain microbial populations help the body process otherwise indigestible carbohydrates and proteins, leading to greater energy extraction and associated weight gain, experimental results have shown some inconsistency. For example, while a number of studies have indicated a greater prevalence of Bacteroidetes in lean individuals and have linked the prevalence of Firmicutes with obesity, the authors stress that many questions remain.

Alterations in gut microbiota are also of crucial concern for the one billion people worldwide who suffer from undernutrition. Illnesses resulting from undernutrition contribute to over half of the global fatalities in children under age 5. Those who do survive undernutrition often experience a range of serious, long-term mental and physical effects. The role of gut microbial diversity among the undernourished has yet to receive the kind of concentrated research effort applied to obesity ? a disease which has reached epidemic proportions in the developed world.

Exploiting microbes affecting energy extraction may prove a useful tool for non-surgically addressing obesity as well as treating undernutrition, though more research is needed for a full understanding of regulatory mechanisms governing the delicate interplay between intestinal microbes and their human hosts.

Dr. Krajmalnik-Brown and colleagues at the Biodesign Institute and Mayo Clinic are currently in the second year of an NIH-funded study to better understand the role of the gut microbiome in the success or failure of surgical procedures performed to treat obesity including the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band and vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

Why I do Grant Proposal Development the way I do | Jo VanEvery

I have been helping social science and humanities researchers with grant proposals since April 2005. In that time, how I approach the task has shifted. Those shifts have not been arbitrary. I am learning all the time. And I adjust my practice based on what I?m learning.

I am not an editor. Or a grant writer.

In my experience starting with a draft is frustrating for both of us, especially if you don?t send me that draft until fairly close to the deadline.

You might think it just needs tweaks and copy edits but I?m betting it doesn?t.

If it really does just need that, you don?t need to pay me. Go to your Research Services Office or whichever office of your university helps with this stuff. Talk to the Associate Dean for research. Ask a colleague who?s been successful at securing a grant. (You should do that anyway, even if you also hire me.)

The way I work now, we start with a conversation.

Why a conversation?

The impetus for designing my service this way was the recognition that I was seeing the same problems in many proposals. I?m a sociologist. I look for explanations in bigger structural issues. And I found them.

Asking good questions is one of my superpowers. In this conversation I can ask questions based on my understanding of the granting process that help you articulate the things that need to be in the proposal.

If necessary, I also help you reframe the proposal from this thing you have to do to something that you want to do because it will help you do the research you most want to do (whether you get the grant or not).

?Why do I have to continuously explain why this is important??

There are things that need to be in a grant proposal that are obvious to the researcher. Because they are obvious, it is really really difficult to articulate them. And it feels like a waste of time.

Explaining why your research is significant is probably at the top of the list of obvious things that are really frustrating to write about.

You know what you want to do. What is obvious to you, and thus most frustrating to write about is why it is important. And yet that section, also known as the literature review, is probably the most important part of the proposal from the point of view of getting funding.

You can write the best methodology section ever and if it isn?t clear what you hope to achieve and why that is significant for audiences that matter to this funder, you will not get funded.

That?s why I am happy to spend a whole hour asking you questions so that I can help you write it. An hour in which you are not tearing your hair out and writing drafts that need to be completely rewritten.

After the conversation

After we talk, I send an e-mail. Most of the e-mail messages I wrote last year after these initial conversations contained an outline of the literature review section (called Context in a SSHRC application).

I don?t know the details of the literature but I can write an outline, based on our conversation, telling you which bits of the literature to talk about in what order and how much detail you need for different parts.

I also usually try to clarify what your objectives are in a way that makes sense to people who aren?t already embedded in your particular field of research.

What?s new this year

This year I adjusted again, to provide you with support in between the meeting and having a final draft.

It?s not the writing of the proposal that is the problem. Writing is easy. It?s the thinking that?s hard. And it really benefits from an approach that includes lots of time to mull things over.

I don?t have to throw everything at you after the meeting. I can give you a ?start here? suggestion and add next steps as you need them.

I created a whole bunch of worksheets, colouring pages, and even audio files to help you with specific parts of the process. Not everyone needs all of them. It?s useful to have me suggest a specific approach to deal with a specific issue you are facing right now. And then to say, now try this.

I support you in developing this more sustainable habit of thinking and writing with e-mail check-ins. I encourage you to also work on writing articles and other important tasks simultaneously. I also encourage you to take time off, go to the lake, play with your kids?

Then when you have a full draft, I read it and either confirm that it?s great or make final suggestions for edits. All of this in plenty of time for you to do whatever your institution needs you to do before submitting it to the agency.

Making the process and the product better

My goal is to do more than help you write a better grant proposal. My goal is to help you write a better grant proposal in less time, with less frustration.

All the energy and time you save can then go into your actual research. Or revamping that course you?ve been meaning to restructure. Or a real vacation that enables you to return to work refreshed, rejuvenated, and more productive than before.

If this sounds like it would work for you

Book a 1-hour conversation. It costs $175+applicable taxes (Canadian dollars; Canadians pay GST or HST). After you pay you will be redirected to a page explaining how to get started and how to book an appointment.

In relationships, feelings of intimacy, closeness and satisfaction never stay exactly the same. The feelings you have for your partner today will change over time.

The feelings we have for our partner change for many different reasons:

Relationships are typically easiest at the beginning ? then things are new, exciting, and full of possibilities. And at the start of any relationship, people are on their best behavior and partners not know each other very well. So, people see their partners in the best possible light and lovers have the tendency to fill in the ?blanks? with positive information. But, over time, the things that were once new and exciting have a tendency to become routine and boring, possibilities turn into limitations, and as couples get to know each other better negative traits and characteristics begin surface. Added together, relationships lose some of their luster over time.

Every time your spouse or partner enters a new social environment there is always the risk that they might meet someone who they are more attracted too, someone who they have more feelings for, someone who they connect with better, and so on. Often people meet the love of their life after they have made a commitment to someone else. Unfortunately, life is often unpredictable and unfair when it comes to love and romance.

Android 41 Jelly Bean preview download is live, probably won't work on your Galaxy Nexus yet

Google has opted to deliver Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as an OTA update to the ICS already on the Nexus phones and tablets it just handed everyone at I/O 2012, and there's a manual download link available too. As Android Police notes, only GSM phones running the IMM330D firmware will take the update (which you probably, although a fresh phone from the initial Google Play run might work.) With this release already in the wild it's surely only a matter of time before various third parties open it up to a wider variety of hardware. As always with early and somewhat untested software YMMV, keep an eye on those XDA Developers threads for the latest updates.

Dr. Gabor Mat?: When the Body Says No: Understanding the Stress ...

The Vancouver-based Dr. Gabor Mat? argues that too many doctors seem to have forgotten what was once a commonplace assumptionthat emotions are deeply implicated in both the development of illness and in the restoration of health. Based on medical studies and his own experience with chronically ill patients at the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital, where he was the Medical Coordinator for seven years, Dr. Gabor Mate makes the case that there are important links between the mind and the immune system. He found that stress and individual emotional makeup play critical roles in an array of diseases.

Madoff's brother to plead guilty to conspiracy

By Basil Katz and Jonathan Stempel, Reuters

Peter Madoff, the brother of Bernard Madoff and former chief compliance officer of the imprisoned swindler's firm, is expected to plead guilty to criminal charges of conspiracy and falsifying records, U.S. prosecutors said on Wednesday.

In a letter filed in Manhattan federal court, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said Madoff is expected to enter his plea on Friday and agreed not to seek a sentence other than 10 years in prison.

Madoff also agreed to a criminal forfeiture of about $143.1 billion, including all real and personal property, the letter said.

John Wing, a lawyer for Madoff, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Peter Madoff would become the first member of Bernard Madoff's family to admit to criminal charges in connection with wrongdoing at the former Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, a case prosecutors unveiled in December 2008.

Prosecutors have not said whether criminal cases are also being prepared against Bernard Madoff's son Andrew, who was co-director of trading, or his niece Shana, who was a compliance officer at the firm.

Both are being sued by Irving Picard, the trustee seeking money for the Ponzi scheme's victims. He has filed a $255 million lawsuit against them and other Madoff family members.

Martin Flumenbaum, a lawyer for Andrew Madoff, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A lawyer for Shana Madoff could not immediately be identified.

Peter Madoff is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and mail fraud as well as making false statements about the firm's compliance program and investment advisory business.

A second charge accuses him of falsifying records of an investment adviser.

About one dozen people have now been implicated in criminal wrongdoing related to Bernard Madoff's former firm.

Five have pleaded not guilty: Annette Bongiorno, Daniel Bonventre, Joann Crupi, Jerome O'Hara and George Perez.

Frank DiPascali, the firm's former chief financial officer and often called Bernard Madoff's right-hand man, pleaded guilty in August 2009 and has been praised by prosecutors for his subsequent cooperation.

DiPascali has yet to be sentenced. His lawyer Marc Mukasey declined comment.

Picard has estimated that customers of the Madoff firm lost about $20 billion. On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling on the trustee's methods for calculating losses. That decision could help Picard repay customers faster.

A spokeswoman for Picard did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bernard Madoff, 74, is serving a 150-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in March 2009. He was ordered to forfeit $170.8 billion, more than twice the size of his estimated fraud.

Plant DNA logged to develop drugs

Wales has recorded the DNA of all its native flowering plants, which has potential to help conservation and develop new drugs to fight illnesses.

The National Botanic Garden of Wales says it is the first country in the world to create the database.

Wales has about 75% of UK flowering plants, and the database has 1,143 plants and conifers.

Barcodes are short DNA sequences and plants can be identified from pollen grains, seed pieces, or roots and wood.

Other plants introduced by humans will form the next phase of the three-year project.

HONEY BEE HOPE IN FIGHT OVER HOSPITAL BUGS

PhD student Jenny Hawkins is working on a joint project between the garden and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Cardiff University to DNA barcode honey.

She has collected honey from across the UK and is testing its ability to kill hospital acquired infections such as MRSA.

She will then DNA barcode the honey to find out what plants bees visited to make it.

Ms Hawkins said: "By DNA barcoding the honey, we are looking for links between honey with good medicinal properties and particular plant species.

"If we find it, we might be able to make a super honey by allowing bees to forage on plants that provide high antibacterial properties."

The Barcode Wales project has been led by Dr Natasha de Vere, head of conservation and research from the National Botanic Garden in Carmarthenshire.

She said: "Wales is now in the unique position of being able to identify plant species from materials which in the past would have been incredibly difficult or impossible.

"Through the Barcode Wales project, we have created a powerful platform for a broad range of research from biodiversity conservation to human health."

The Welsh flora DNA barcodes are available on the Barcode of Life Database (BOLD) for use by researchers throughout the world.

DNA barcoding may be able to help in the crisis facing pollinating insects such as bees, according to Dr de Vere.

Pollination role

She is working with PhD student Andrew Lucas from the Swansea Ecology Research Team (SERT) at Swansea University to investigate the role hoverflies play in pollination.

Research will find out where hoverflies go by DNA barcoding the pollen carried on their bodies.

It will tell researchers "how hoverflies move through the landscape and the importance of habitat quality," said Mr Lucas.

Partners in the Barcode Wales project include the National Museum Wales and Aberystwyth and Glamorgan universities, as well as the Botanical Society of the British Isles, and High Performance Computing (HPC) Wales.

Reasons to Get Health Insurance in Your State | Health Exchange ...

There are plenty of good reasons to get covered by health insurance in your state, whether it?s economical or for health reasons, everyone should have some kind of health insurance coverage to help them in times of need.

You May Live Longer

People who have health insurance tend to live longer, higher quality lives than those who do not have health insurance in their state. There are a few reasons for this.

  • People with health insurance tend to go to the doctor more often for smaller problems, thus preventing those problems from turning into even bigger problems that can be life-threatening.
  • Some hospitals refuse to treat people who are uninsured (with the exception of emergency rooms), meaning that if you don?t have insurance, you may have to wait until it is a life-threatening emergency before you get treatment for your condition.
  • People with chronic conditions such as diabetes have a higher mortality rate when they are uninsured, due to not being able to afford health care when they need it.

If you have a condition or not, you need health insurance as it may help you extend your life and keep it at a higher quality.

Your Finances Will Thank You

Health care is costly. Insurance companies estimate a three day hospital stay costs around $30,000. Some outpatient procedures cost $50,000 for a basic treatment (that?s without complications). Appendectomies and knee surgeries also run around $50,000 for the simple procedure. If you don?t have health insurance, that expense would have to come from your pocket, entirely.

But if you do have health insurance in your state, you won?t have to fret over every last dollar. Collections from hospitals can be frightening when they put a lien on your property ? but you can avoid these scenarios with a proper health insurance plan.

Expanded Health Care Options

reasons to get health insuranceBecause hospitals can refuse care for the uninsured (with the exception of emergencies), you might not be able to pick and choose which doctor or hospital you go to for treatment. However, if you have insurance, you can choose from a greater number of options, and opt for better doctors and hospitals. You can take control over your health and health choices by getting health insurance coverage.

These are just a few of many good reasons to get health insurance coverage in your state. Don?t put yourself or your family at risk. Get a health insurance quote for your state that is tailored to your specific situation.

Air Force Reserve wants an app for basic training

44 min.

Military recruits have marched off to boot camp with nothing more than their families' well-wishes in the past, but today's warriors could get a little help from their smartphones. The U.S. Air Force Reserve has drawn up a wish list for a smartphone app that can help recruits adjust to basic training and military life.

The dream app combines nutrition and exercise features that even civilian smartphone owners might envy. One app feature would count calories based on photos of food taken by the phone. Another would map a recruit's runs based on their smartphone GPS. A third feature would even provide a digital assistant similar to the Apple iPhone's Siri that can talk fitness encouragement to trainees.

But the app ideas list also has plenty of military-centric features based on learning military law, chain of command or individual responsibilities as an Air Force Reserve member. Even suggested games have themes, including "Name the Military Tune" or "Weapons Familiarization" for the U.S. military's standard-issue M-16 assault rifle ? not to mention games for learning rank, chain of command, military law, and Air Force history.

Such games would combine with possible social networking features that include basic profile information (including gender, base of assignment and ship date) and help bring people together for carpooling or to cooperate in fitness challenges. The Air Force Reserve envisions the app allowing up to 4,000 users at a time accessing the Internet through smartphone, netbook, tablet or computer.

The Air Force Reserve put out the call for interested smartphone app-makers in a "request for information" notice on June 13 with an original deadline of June 26 for any interested app-makers. But it has already extended the contact due date to July 6 because of "significant interest and questions."

Funny, if you follow the links to the CDC page on the Wayback Machine, it expressly contradicts what the scare-site "Child Health Safety" claims.

NIP: Vacsafe/Concerns/Autism/FAQs-Autism and MMR

"Italy Court"? Shouldn't that be "Italian Court"? Somehow sites with weird grammar (not to mention bizarre claims contradicted by its own sources) just don't seem credible.

The blockage is most likely emotional, possibly based on fear, and one does not most effectively deal with emotional barriers by using facts as instruments of assault and battery. - Dan Murphy
