Matt Holliday Surprises Cancer Patient with Home Run Ball

holliday_0709-6041(KTVI) ? A Cardinal Glennon patient got quite a surprise on his 10th birthday when Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday walked into his hospital room.

On Tuesday, Holliday and his wife, Leslee, were visiting patients on the 4th floor of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children?s Medical Center when they were told about Alex Wangerin?s birthday. The 10-year-old boy is suffering from cancer.

Holliday signed a ball and took a few pictures, lifting Alex?s spirits.

After leaving the hospital, Holliday hit a home run in the first inning of Tuesday?s game against the Astros. He asked an usher to track down the person who caught his home run ball and traded them an autographed bat for the ball.

The staff at Cardinal Glennon was shocked when the Cardinals? slugger returned to the hospital at 11 p.m. Tuesday to deliver the autographed home run ball to Alex. The boy was asleep, but his shocked and grateful mother accepted the ball from the Cardinals star.
