The school board will consider two options. One opens 60 spots to new transfer students and one offers none. It's part of a new state law that requires districts to release students who want to attend other districts and determine the number of transfers-in each district will take.
In Beaverton, both options state that the district agrees not to "actively recruit" students from other Washington County districts in order to maintain the balance of transfer students between districts.
Both options also give priority to the district's 132 existing transfer students, who annually fill out transfer forms to stay in Beaverton's district despite living in another city.
In Option I, the district will open 15 seats at Cedar Mill Elementary, and 15 at West Tualatin View Elementary. No middle school slots will open, but the district will take 30 students at Beaverton High School.
A board memo notes that the three schools offer special education programs that are "highly attractive" to outside families.
The district will also set "geographic limitations" on transfer students, meaning it will not take kids from certain districts because it already has an abundance of transfers from those areas.
Option II isn't as friendly to outsiders. In addition to offering no slots, except to existing transfers, it notes that the special education programs are at or above capacity and should be maintained for resident students.
The board is expected to make a decision on the matter around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
